TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I use figures to illustrate processes, such as flow of information for
accounting software, and forms that appear on the screen. I like to
illustrate the forms to orient readers who may not be working on the
computer at the time they are reading the manual, or to provide
self checks (the form Add/Edit Event, as shown in figure 3, appears
on your screen).
However, as we are moving our documentation online, and most of our
staff have character-based VAX terminals (I write primarily for our
staff of 120 people), I am having to leave the figures out of the
documentation for now.
PS I usually create the illustrations during the initial draft stage.
