Instead of "As you can see in Figure 1, ... " I often use " ... , as
illustrated in Figure 1." In the case of my material, this arrangement
usually gets the procedure step (action to be taken) or result at the
beginning of a line (or mini-paragraph) and the figure number at the end,
for easy scanning.
When I'm writing a printed manual, I assume that many or most of the
"readers" are actually "skimmers" who learn best by flipping through the
book looking for pictures. I hope that when they see Figure 1 and its
caption, they will look in the nearby text for the reference and find
explanatory text on either side. In addition to helping readers get from
the text to the picture, I hope to get skimmers from the picture to the
text.
