Susan Mitchell asks a question which I think I can answer:

> Where is the nearest STC chapter to Durham, North Carolina?

That would be the Carolina chapter, of which I am a member, centered
around the Research Triangle Park area, roughly the triangle formed by
the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

> Is there more than one chapter nearby?

NCSU has a student chapter, I think (don't quote me).

We get our share of both. We have a membership of around 200 or so.

> - Active/Dead?

We are quite active, thanks. We meet monthly except for the summer
months, have a spring seminar, recently sponsored a district meeting
with the national president as keynote speaker, have a newsletter,
participate in competitions, and so forth.

> - Focused on ___________

The chapter leadership has been very active in recent years in trying to
provide forums and presentation to benefit every portion of the
membership. This includes regular forums for independent contractors and
managers. The program director regularly arranges top flight technical
and professional experts, panel discussions, topics of interest, etc.,
at the monthly meetings. We've had panels on licensing tech writers,
presentations on multimedia, presentations on translation techniques,
and even an entertaining presentation about Esperanto as and
intermediate translation tool.

> Thanks,

No problem. I'm not as active as I used to be, but I manage to get to
several meetings a year. We kickoff 93-94 with a buffet at an outdoor
pavilion by a local lake on September 9. Drop by, why don't you? I'll
certainly be there, not to scare you off or anything 8-).
