Faxes send _only_ images--images of text pages, images of graphics, images of
halftones. &c. A fax received by a computer fax board results in a graphics
file. So text _cannot_ be dumped into a word-processing program directly.
(If you wanna receive _text_, the sanest thing to do is to have the sender
transmit a text file from a computer, not from a fax.)
Some recent software will convert the graphics file from the fax board into a
text file--even keeping font and format info, in the case of some sophisticated
packages. Essentially, this optical character reader (OCR) software scans the
fax graphics file just as other software scans printed text.
