Mary Beth,

Amen on registration fees. I wrote IEEE recently about their registration
fees as well as "resort" locales for conference. I don't care about receiving
tote bags or portfolios or whatever with the conference logo on them. Lower
my registration fee! I, too, feel somewhat put out that for STC my attendance
is making them money. I am going to Dallas because I am already in Texas
(however it is a six hour drive...), but don't know yet about next year.

I noticed that the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing had a note
in their bulletin about ATTW folk speaking to executive committee of 4Cs
about conference costs. So even a relative "inexpensive" conference like 4Cs
is perhaps feeling the impact of belt tightening in academia.

I value the mix of industry and academia at STC and IEEE. I think it would
be bad for our whole discipline/endeavor if this opportunity to meet with
one another becomes the preserve of those who can get extravagent travel
funds.
