Re: STC going bankrupt
Yeah, as president of the local Puget Sound chapter, we tried to provide value to those who were members and nonmembers. Right now, we are trying to find a way to possibly become a private chapter/business. The individual chapters manage their chapters individually, and then report yearly on what they do, the money they raise, and other activities.
They are supposed to be kicking back to us operating costs, and those are the fees you pay if you want to affiliate with an individual chapter. They didnât do that last year, and told us a while ago. They were not planning to do it for this year. So they took money that they collected last year and kept it for themselves.
As far as I know, weâre the only chapter that sends out newsletters to anyone who signs up for themand encourages non-chapter members to participate in our events and other activities. I was just getting ready to request volunteers to have us work on some things that wouldâve brought us together as a stronger community and had us meet occasionally in person. I canât tell you how bad I feel personally about this closure. Iâve been involved in a STC at various levels and with two chapters: the Puget Sound and the San Diego chapters. Iâm just heartbroken.
The only way we would go bankrupt is if they forced us to do it because of their mismanagement.
We are currently in nonprofit status, we were aware of this was possibly going to happen but were told they were going to wait until Summit to see what happened before they made the decision.
And in the meantime, we were putting together programs and a day long event for our chapter.
So my personal feeling is to continue on and speak to their attorney or possibly our own attorney to see what we can do.
I will keep people posted. And there is no reason why you canât all participate in the Puget Sound chapter. There is nothing that we are offering at this moment so I donât have any links to give you. But we will soon be offering a LinkedIn workshop and a couple of monthly chapter meetings so stay tuned.
Iâm not going down and STC Puget Sound chapter is not going down without a fight.
And worst case scenario, we will give out a lot of scholarships and have one big party if we canât turn this around.
Regards,
Lin Laurie
