Hi Ken;

I don't know if you have seen this page, and please forgive me if you have, but did you look at:
https://portal.office.com/signup/logout?OfferId=0F5B471A-08EF-4e69-ABB0-BB4DA43F0344&DL=VISIOCLIENT&culture=en-US&country=US&ali=1

MS wants you to sign up for an account, but so does everyone else.

I have to agree with Bob, if you have used the tool at all, it shouldn't be that hard to pick it up again. I've often found that when clients/head hunters focus on tools, it's because they don't know what a tech writer does and what skills to ask for.

You might also be able to buy a cheap, older version of Visio off of Amazon and use that. I do that with MS Office for any MS-specific demands from clients, etc.

Group,
Several job recruiters I've heard from lately say their clients want someone with Microsoft Visio experience. Unfortunately, my last employer (where I was for 9 and 1/2 years) was China-based and extremely "frugal" (major cheap), and refused to fund updates to our software tools and even learn new ones. For example, while the rest of the FrameMaker community was already in the mid-teens version, we remained with FrameMaker 10 (which did work, but still . . . ).
I had dabbled with a trial version of MS Visio some years ago on my own, but now I can't find any trial versions available unless you buy a suite of stuff from MS. I told one recruiter I'd be glad to download the open office version of Visio, but nope, their client wanted experience with the real thing.
Am I SOL or does anyone have an extra legitimate copy they no longer need?

Ken,

I am not suggesting that you "embellish" your resume, but if you have
played around with it, even though a trial version, you can honestly
state that you have "some experience with it but are not a power
user". Ask to see the kind of diagram they would expect you to create,
if possible. Visio can be a little fiddly but isn't very hard to pick
up.

Bob
