Strategies for finding gig work?

I have been working closely with a good friend of mine who owns a small IT
consulting firm. I think this may turn out to be a good opportunity, but in
the meantime there is only half-time and sporadic paid work.

I am at a point in my career where I know I can get a full-time job
whenever I need one--but right now the ideal situation would be gig work.

I know that sites like Elance exist, but I am wondering if there are other
strategies I should look at to try to find remote, part-time work?
