Similarly, on a job several years ago, we hired a second writer. When she
went to an SME for info, he told her to find me for the doc.

As I tell my reviewers, "Documentation is policy" and "Silence is consent."

Resourcefulness...

I've been at two or three places where writers were not allowed to
experiment with the latest builds, or were given hardware that could not run
the company's product. At one place, when I requested information my SME
handed me a copy of the book I was supposed to update. One frustrated but
resourceful writer wrote a new document full of blatant lies and sent it out
for review.

Another writer, even more resourceful, included, "For further information
telephone (SME's real cell phone number) any time day or night." That review
copy went ONLY to the reluctant SME. Very dangerous technique, probably best
avoided.
