Avoid developer jargon and acronyms and explain linking and embedding
in end-user terms, the way Microsoft does:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Link-or-embed-an-Excel-worksheet-41bf021e-ba7c-44ef-9914-0d7e88062257

Naive users often make mistakes such as:

- sharing a file with someone who doesn't have the application for the
embedded or linked object
- sharing a file but not the linked file
- sharing a file with a link to a file on a network drive that the
recipient does not have access to
- opening a file containing a link or embedded object with an
incompatible version of the application

I'm pretty sure these issues are why it has never caught on big.
