As I said, asking for anything you don't have is a potential risk. In most cases it's a pretty negligible one, but I'm not going to tell people that when I don't know anything about the corporate culture where they work.

I once took over an existing department and discovered that a writer who had been there for over 10 years was being paid 20% less than new hires. Took a bit of arguing about the fellow's deep experience and long history of reliable performance, but I managed to get him up to par. If you have a manager who sees the disparity and is willing to go fight to fix it, that's one thing, but if what you have is one who's telling you that you can't even telecommute anymore, I don't see that as promising.
