WRT Bill Darnell's point below, I'm willing to bet that the APA
requirements also specify a monospaced font. If so, then the double
spacing really does aide reading, because the period can be missed and
potentiality lead to confusion when the following sentence begins with a
a formal noun or an "I". One can blow right past the period and try to
read the following sentence as a continuation or clause.

IF APA doesn't specify a monospaced font and allows for proportional
fonts... then that's just archaic.

[I also bet it specifies double-spaced lines, so editors can markup in
between them.]

A widely used guide, "The Publication Manual of the American
Psychological
Association" (APA, vol. 6, p.88) specifies two spaces following the
period
for draft documents. It says, "Spacing twice after punctuation marks at
the
end of a sentence aids readers of draft manuscripts."
