A large part of the work I do is project management, particularly localization projects. I'm thinking that I'd like to get more formal training in project management to help my work. So I'm wondering how useful is getting the PMP certificate by PMI for the tech comm domain. Have any of you done it and how useful has it been? Did your company support you to do the certification? How practical and expensive is it to continue to stay certified as you need to renew it every 3 years? Do employers care if we've formal training in project management? I haven't yet discussed it with my manager as I'm still collecting info. My company doesn't use agile.

There is another option and that's to do the MOOC on project management offered by Couresa (https://www.coursera.org/specializations/project-management?utm_source=catalog). There's also a MOOC diploma that's completely free offered by Alison (https://alison.com/courses/Diploma-in-Project-Management). 138,000 people have already done the Alison diploma! The Coursera MOOC can also count towards PMP certification.

Would love to hear what your experience is on project management training and its usefulness.

Jennifer
