That doesn't stop them or someone else thinking they are just as good at 
technical writing as you are, though.

After all, we all learned to write in third grade. And we have all used 
Microsoft Word for years. :-)

A couple things come right to mind...

Many of my colleagues are amateurs when it comes to using Microsoft
Word, even though it's probably the primary tool most of us use.

Many of my colleagues don't have good design skills, even though it's
something that would benefit our clients/employers a lot.
