Wow, there is a lot of community support for your query. Nice!

I don't know if you still require assistance but here goes....

Although Word is *not* an ideal tech writer tool, 85 pages is normally
easily manageable by Word. I suspect that your direct copy and paste from
Publisher to Word is also copying hidden control codes and whatnot. That
might be the underlying issue. If possible, save your Word doc in another
format... example RTF... and then reload and see if the problem goes away.
Actually try re-saving in different formats until one of them works for
you.

In the future, don't copy direct into Word, rather use Word's (keep Text
only) Paste option *OR* use an intermediary tool like Notepad to strip
hidden control codes.
