This was a culture clash that went all the way back to the earliest days of
OO. When Sun acquired Star and took it open source, it attracted a cadre
of outside volunteer developers who were largely driven by a desire to help
"stick it to" the giant MS. These folks often butted heads with Sun's
management, but usually were able to come to grudging compromises because
they were still "sticking it to" MS. But when Oracle acquired Sun and
stepped up corporate direction of OO, it escalated the tensions AND added
the new wrinkle of a corporate management that a lot of the outside
volunteer developers disliked even more than MS. The opportunity to get
out from under that and "stick it to" Oracle and MS at the same time was
just too attractive for them to resist.

The MS Office file formats are open specification. License from MS not
required to use them.
