I make how-to videos for our webhelp, and don't use any music for them.
However, I also make tour videos and promo videos for new releases that are
more marketing-oriented, and I like to use music for those. Mostly
Norwegian Death Metal.

Agree with most of the points above about professional looking videos. Use
zooming and panning, but only when necessary and helpful. Also, make
guidelines of what transitions, pans, and zooms to use and be consistent.

As far as a script, I think it's a matter of what works best for you. I do
a script and have my audio person read it, leaving a few seconds between
each sentence. I do the video after, and then edit everything to match.
Doing both at once never worked well for me.

Finally, invest in a good microphone and always use the same one with the
same settings. Audio makes a huge difference.
