Depends on the type of organization you are writing for, your audience, and
whether or not there are plans to localize. If I were working for a very
large organization, I would absolutely adhere to formal standards; however,
in a smaller organization, it is easier to bend the rules to whatever works.

My only exception is localization. Translation is expensive so you want to
mitigate errors and make it is easy as possible for the translator. In that
case, I would write: "Device(s)" as "Device or Devices".
