TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Methinks you're being too literal, Kat. Not for a moment do I think the
recruiter invested his time searching me out on LinkedIn, vetting me on the
phone, and then presenting me (remotely) to his client—for whom he is their
sole "HR person" at this time.
I can usually sniff out the pro recruiters from the wannabes, but this one
got by me. I didn't ask enough questions regarding EXACTLY what role his
client was looking to fill, and who would be the primary recipient of the
expected deliverables. Nor did the recruiter ask those very questions of
his client; all he knew was "cloud computing" and "technical writing".
Obviously that wasn't enough information for either of us to go on, and I
should have sensed it. And if the recruiter were a true pro, he would
already have had all of the particulars in hand.
Had he done his homework, I might be starting a new job the week after
next, for I did pass the first-round interviews (which included the company
VP/co-founder). I was slain by the remote SE during a Skype interview to
which I should have never subjected myself.
