I think you all are making it too complicated.


If I am doing the action, then I upload when I send and download when I receive.

If someone else is doing the action to me, then I receive when they upload and I send when they download.


Since I doubt your document includes you in the procedure along with the person doing the work, I'd say the first part is all you need.

Hi, all.

It appears we last discussed this in 2004, so it's time for another round.

I understand there to be two competing concepts behind these terms:

--Direction (wikipedia uses this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uploading_and_downloading)
--Nature of devices involved (webopedia uses this: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/download.html)

Direction: You download to the system you are using, and upload to another system from it.

Example: At my mainframe, I upload data to someone's iPad. At my iPad, I upload data to the mainframe.

Nature of devices: Main/peripheral and by implication large/small. You upload from a smaller system to a larger and download from a larger system to a smaller.

Example: At my mainframe, I download data to an iPad. At my iPad, I upload data to a mainframe.

My project currently uses these terms inconsistently.

I think I will use "send" and "receive" and end the confusion. Does that seem like the correct choice of action? Is there any reason to struggle on with upload and download?
