Curate does come from Latin. I agree with Kevin's thoughts on language
below. But, I think it's important to note that, as words entered the
English lexicon throughout its history, those words originally carried
with them the essence of the words they borrowed from in Latin or Late
French. Over time, we moderns forget those meanings as we bastardize
old words for new uses.
Curate, in its earliest sense, means to maintain something in its best
state. When a doctor cures you, he or she is forestalling your eventual
decline. When I used to perform title curative work for oil companies,
I was correcting issues that clouded a chain of title. A museum curator
maintains one or more collections, which are subject to loss through
any of a number of means, including theft, sale, or gift.
The newer uses you guys have cited indicate the users are referring to
a creative service, rather than a curative service. There's no counter
to fads in language, but it's worthwhile to note them as they occur. A
simple collection of electronic artifacts cannot be curated, but that
won't stop people from saying so.

Um......... didn't the bulk of our language come from Latin?
Much of it via French/Norman, mind you, but I've long thought
of English as the illegitimate cousin to the Romance languages.
The cousin with hybrid vigor, of course. :-)

Anyway, I speculate that "curate" will become another victim of the
language wars. It'll be spread way thinner than could possibly
be justified, and when its fabric is in tatters, it'll be discarded,
as being of no more use to anyone, including those who formerly
used it properly.

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English i
s about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, E
nglish has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and r
ifle their pockets for new vocabulary." -J. Nicoll

This all reminds me of someone's question in another thread
whether Canada had some official body similar to the Academie Franc, aise
to lay down the law about French usage. No, Canada doesn't.
But Quebec, a province (that's a thing roughly equivalent to a State) within
Canada, does have the Office de la langue Franc, aise which has some
of that function. So, if you are translating documentation, to sell product
into French Canada, that's the crowd you're looking to please.
Good luck getting the new meanings of "curate" paste them. :-)

Probably not documentation. Doesn't seem like it would apply very
well.

Do you think we should ever use this word in documentation? It
sounds like it has come from Latin, and therefore, will be less
understandable.

Yeah, "curated news" is a new buzzword for sites like Paper.li,
Scoop.it and Storify. It's what you're doing on Tech Writer This Week
too, so congratulations on your new "curator" title. 8-)

I've been seeing "curate" increasingly used as a verb in the sense of
"to pick items of high quality and/or interest".

Subject: When to use the word "curate?"
Morning, Whirlers,

As I browsed a few newsy sites this morning, I saw the word "curate"
being
used where I used to see "written," "compiled," "developed," or
even
"created."

I put it to you all. When should we use "curate," and when should we
not?

Cordially,
Craig Cardimon
