A couple of decades ago (70s & 80s) I transferred from the old NY Telephone Co where I was a Traffic Engineer to a three-year assignment at Bell Labs (this is when the Bell System existed). My assignment at Bell Labs was to coordinate the trial of a new mechanized traffic system that Bell Labs had developed to aid traffic engineers at all of the local Bell System companies.

My title at Bells Labs was "Business Systems Analyst," mainly to differentiate me from the direct Bell Labs employees whose titles were "MTS" or Members of the Technical Staff.

My initial duties were to develop specs for the selection of an RBOC (regional Bell System Company) as the trial company. NY Telephone wanted to be the selected company, which is why they offered my services. They were eventually selected.

At the end of my tour I requested a permanent position at Bell Labs, mainly because some of my children started to attend Rutgers University and I had moved my family from Long Island to New Jersey. I was accepted and my title then became MTS.

If so, I'd love to hear about what you did on the job. It's my understanding that this is somewhat different from the "Business Analyst" I asked about the other week.

But, apologies for any duplication from that last post. (I still have everyone's responses and am going to study those more as part of this research.) Heading towards the "fiscal cliff" soon (end of the contract), and just want to get a quick sense of what this is about.

I can justify occasionally poking in my Techwhirl inbox but not so much browsing Wikipedia etc. :)
