I find Gmail insufficiently user-friendly to use as a primary mail client.
I use it on the road and from the office to do quick checks of multiple
accounts, then let the filters on my "real" mail client on my home PC sort
the messages I decide to hang onto.

One thing Gmail does do really well is spam filtering. I seldom see any
spam, and at the same time almost never find when I return home and check
my regular mail client that Gmail has blocked a message that should have
gotten through.
