There's another way. I won't claim that the terms "easy", or
"user-friendly" apply.

Word button >> Prepare >> Edit links to files.
For each image, there will either be a check mark in the "Save picture
in document" field or there won't. If the option to save is
available, then the image isn't embedded.

I prefer linked images for myself - makes it easier to do updates.
When sending a document elsewhere, I create a copy of the document and
use the above to ensure that all the images are embedded before I send
it. If there's a "pack-and-go" button, I haven't found it yet.
