When did 'compute' become a noun, and 'x' become a word?

Subject: When did 'compute' become a noun, and 'x' become a word?

I attended (part of) a developer's summit this week (I *used* to be a
developer, now I'm a writer), and heard two words, repeatedly, that were
driving me crazy J.

- 'x' and 'compute' - As in "This device delivers a 10x increase in
compute over this other device", where '10x' is pronounced as "ten ex" and
means "ten times", and 'compute' means "computational power".

Have hardware/low-level developers been using these words in this way all
along, or is it something relatively new? Just curious.
