I had already been a manager for a number of years before these discussions
began in earnest, and since every interview I've had for the past 15 year or
so has concentrated less on my ability to do hands-on documentation than on
my ability to recruit, train and manage writers and their projects, I've
always approached the question of writer certification from the POV of a
hiring manager. I've also tried to put myself in the heads of my own
managers, who are usually engineering or product managers or corporate
executives who don't have my own documentation experience. I've never
expected writer certification to do anything for my own career, except
perhaps to help me maintain my image as a talent scout. So any comments I
make on the subject should be viewed from that perspective.
