While there may be a prescribed way, there is usually a consistent way.

So Becca, you could ask your teacher to clarify her opinion, but complete the assignment bases on what she said. in the school, she's the boss.

How many of us haven't worked in places where "the style" didn't match our ideals?

I've been wondering that. And I wonder if they actually teach that in technical writing classes in schools... sometimes it's just not worth fighting whatever power structure is in place to do what is grammatically correct or a "best practice" - if you're not the first tech writer a place has had, others have already come before you and had their say. And sometimes you have to make the call to let things you don't like slide to focus on other things (while I'd like to do a terminology cleanup of our 15000 pages of documentation, with our development cycle there will never be the time for that and it will take me 10 years to get it done in the spare moments I have).

Do teachers teach "don't get hung up on the grammar"? Because even though we can be word-smith-y, you often need to remind yourself to pick your battles.
