To give you some kind of frame of reference, I just generated a PDF for
a 114-page manual. It has 13 chapters and 19 component files in all,
when you count the front matter and such. It has 36 linked .eps images,
ranging from 30K to 1.8 MB. Average file size is about 850K. There's
also a robust collection of bookmarks and x-refs. It took 1 min 45 sec
to generate.

I'm running Acrobat X and FM 9. I have Winx XP SP 3 on a 2.66 GHz
machine (Intel Core 2 Duo) with 4 GB of RAM.

HTH,
Jim

Subject: Is my Acrobat up to speed?

Hi All

I'm being asked to justify my request for computer/software upgrade so I
am hoping my colleagues out there can give me an idea about whether my
creation of pdf files is tardy.

I'm running Win XP (SP3) on a 3.4Ghz machine with 1 Mb RAM.
Applications are MS Word 2003 and Acrobat 8. All 32-bit of course

My document is 123 pages and it has 264 linked .png images all with an
average size of 70-80 Kb.
Acrobat is set Basic standard with no bookmarks or links, no Word
cross-ref features and no heading bookmarks.

And this takes 7min 32 sec from clicking [Start] to seeing new opened
pdf file.

Now, is my system slow? Or do others see same performance with similar
parameters? And can anyone with later setup (64-bit, Win 7, MS Word
2010, Acrobat X etc) give me an idea of how fast I could expect to raise
this too.
Meanwhile I have another 5 similar docs to put to pdf so that'll keep me
happy till lnch time at least.

Thanks in advance

David (the plodder)
