Actually, I asked him privately and in his case it is $1k for Saturday and Sunday. I won't say what he wrote because I didn't ask if it was OK to reproduce a private conversation here. Better than fishing charters, though.

Considering the amount of equipment you have to lug around and set up and trip over, things like wedding band and DJ are starting to sound like real work. I got into computers so I wouldn't have to do real work.

There are "weekend gigs" that can gross $1000 (or more). Mostly in the entertainment field: DJs and wedding bands, for example. I don't know for sure what photographers/videographers make for such events, but I am guessing they get comparable rates.

I got a "discount" for the DJ at my daughter's sweet 16 party (friend of a friend/"musician's discount") - he got 400 dollars for 6 hours work (1 hour set up/1hr breakdown and 4 hours of music). His normal rates are higher than that. And yes, there is an investment in equipment and music (in the case of DJs) or rehearsal time (in the case of wedding bands) - I'm talking about once that pump is primed.

I think what he means is that after a week of work you have $1000 to

show for it, not $1000 to blow on a weekend or a side gig on the

weekends that pays $1000. That is, gross income per week. Then tax

man, rent man, food man, utilities man, and all other expenses man

cometh (never mind health insurance man or - gasp - COBRA man).
