Yes, system variables can be edited exactly the same way as custom
variables, at least in Frame 7.2. Just do the usual Special > Variable to
open the Variable dialog box, select Current Date, click Edit Definition,
delete the slashes, click Edit, and click Done.

And a brief google for "edit FrameMaker system variables" came up with the
same instructions for FrameMaker 9.

But since that's likely what you did when you did when you said you "take
them out," there must be something else going on. Could you tell us what
version of Frame you're using? And do your custom variables work ok?
