Today, I would be loathe to produce printed manuals at all. Like you, to me
it makes more sense to use print on demand publishing.
In fact, with POD publishers on all the major continents these days, if I
were involved with any product sold internationally I would think that
manuals produced and shipped locally would be an advantage.
As for color, I understand that color e-ink screens will be available within
a year. If they can preserve anything like the present resolution, that
would seem ideal for your use.
