TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
As someone who has been involved in hiring, if the candidate provides a
link to an online portfolio before the interview, I will look at it to
help decide if I want to interview the candidate. However, once the
candidate comes in, I want either a hardcopy portfolio or a CD to pass
around to members of my team so they can review it, and frankly,
hardcopy might be easier in that type of situation. The one time that a
candidate only brought a DVD (because it was a training or marketing
video), it was very inconvenient, because we had difficulty getting it
to run correctly, and we had to spend a lot of time just getting to view
the sample. The whole interviewing process was disrupted and it was very
disorganized.
Also, if you have worked solely in high tech, you might want to keep in
mind that other businesses or organizations might not be so technically
prepared. I've participated in interviews in team settings where the
team members wanted to glance over the hardcopy portfolio right there
during the interview, in a conference room with no computer. Frankly,
that's not an optimum situation, because I want to be able to have time
to really read portions of the samples. It may be a good idea to bring
some hardcopy samples but have a couple of extra samples available in
hardcopy or on a CD so that the interviewers can look at them after the
interview.
