TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My boss is director of marketing, and I sometimes wear both hats. This
morning I was working on design and copy for a magazine ad. This
afternoon, I'll be working on manuals. Manuals have shifted among
departments here, I believe, though the current configuration has been
in place for a good many years. And even though my boss heads up
marketing and business development, no manual goes out the door without
the director of engineering autographing it. We do work closely
together.

At one company Tech Pubs was in Marketing. Someone asked us why we
didn't move our department to Engineering. We replied, "Do you think
that Cambridge, being so close to Boston, should move itself from
Middlesex County to Suffolk County? Or is Cambridge somehow unable to
accomplish such a thing?"
