Do you have the laptop's original recovery discs?  If your computer use habits 
are anything like mine, if it has gone unused long enough for you to forget its 
password, there's probably nothing of value on its HD that you need to preserve 
and its performance is almost certain to be improved by a fresh OS install..

There are password recovery apps available, but no free ones that I would trust 
not to be virus-infected.
