Monique,

Each system must have a working LaTeX distribution and its support
files installed--the various editors such as Lyx depend upon them.
While you can compose a TeX document with any editor if you wish to
insert the various markup yourself, obviously editors such as LyX make
the process far simpler.

MikTeX is such a LaTex distribution for Windows. Others include LaTeX
itself as well as ProTeXt and TeXLive. If you do a seach on "latex
Windows install" for example you will find references to many of these
systems.

I generally have used TeXLive. If you wish, you can run it from a USB
stick or a DVD: <http://www.tug.org/texlive/portable.html>

(Notice that tug.org is a primary TeX resource, as that is the TeX
User Group home.)

There are also countless tools available that can be extremely
helpful. Fortunately, LyX integrates with much of this functionality,
so when it is all installed it becomes rather seamless to the user.

A complete working TeX environment will seem to many computer users to
be somewhat disjointed, as there are numerous alternative methods of
getting from any given point a to point b, as it were. However, this
also gives an enormous amount of flexibility that may be lost with
many of the more integrated applications.

There is also a Windows IDE for TeX called TeXnicCenter:
<http://www.texniccenter.org/> It appears to be quite powerful, but as
I no longer use Windows I have not tried it. (I have played a little
with Kile in Linux, however, but I keep returning to LyX...)

For a while, all this will seem like incredibly strange territory.
Persevere, however, and you are very likely to become quite impressed
by the degree of control you develop over documents and the nonpareil
quality of their output.
