What's this for... a brochure or something that's supposed to look
ultra-spiffy when printed?

If yes, then a 300 dpi JPEG—regardless of its size—is not going to make your
client happy. I strongly suggest you get a RAW
image<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format>from them, or
perhaps a TIF equivalent—taken from an original, non JPEG
version of the same image.

You'll also want yo explain to them what Fred and i have been telling you
about the square image in a rectangular hole dilemma.
