You know that old adage, a picture is worth a thousand words? This is it....
Here is some text to three panels in a figure.
*(A)* Original CAD geometry; *(B) *calculated cross sections based on
intersecting the geometry with planes that are midway between layer
top/bottom planes; *(C)* the device as it will be fabricated (or
exported as a layered STL file), based on the calculated cross sections.
What I am talking about is a LAYER in a layered STL file (if that
helps). The lines being drawn, and which are critical, are drawn halfway
between the top/bottom plane of each layer. So...
--------------------------------------- TOP plane of a layer
========================== The halfway, center (I don't think centroid
is right)
--------------------------------------- BOTTOM plane of a layer
