At one of my previous employers, the writers lobbied to have the group's name
changed from "Technical Publications" to "Technical Communications" (prior to my
arrival).

During my time at this company I went from a situation where half the people I
met at parties didn't know what a technical writer is and half did to one where
half the people I met didn't know what "technical communicator" is and half said
"oh, technical writer." I did not consider this an improvement.

Since then I have encountered people who prefer "technical communicator,"
"information developer" or "documentation specialist" to "technical writer." I
don't know what reactions they get from most people at parties, but mine is
still "oh, technical writer."
