It isn't out of date. My Word 2003 cross-reference field codes look
exactly the same as your Word 2007 example. I think they've been like
that since I learned Word 95.

In the cross-reference field code you're looking at, the only current
switch is \h (hyperlink).

Other possible switches for that field include:

\d
\f
\n
\p
\r
\t
\w
\* MERGEFORMAT
\* CHARFORMAT
...
