Leisa,

Most people studying usability start with the following book:

Nielsen, J. (1994). Usability Engineering. ISBN: 0125184069.

Jakob Nielsen is considered to be a leader in the field, and that text,
while a few years old, is considered by many to be *the* book on
usability.

In addition, the following list of websites should be of some help:

* http://www.asktog.com/
* http://www.hcibib.org/
* http://www.hcirn.com/
* http://www.usableweb.com/
* http://www.stcsig.org/usability/
* http://www.scottberkun.com/
* http://www.jnd.org/
* http://www.usability.gov/
* http://www.usabilityviews.com/
* http://www.usabilitynews.com/
* http://www.useit.com/

Some of them are better than others, but they were all suggested
resources for my usability analysis course at Florida State. If you hunt
around through them, you'll most likely find some really good articles,
advice, etc. scattered throughout.
