In the days before dual (or large) monitors, I'd be most comfortable with
hardcopy "source" documents that could be viewed simultaneously with
whatever was on-screen.

I found the lack of dual monitors particularly vexing when I'm working on
formatting a web page. Having to minimize/expand different windows every
minute or two to see how a small tweak in CSS code changed the layout
became really tiresome. Luckily, we have several "extra" monitors sitting
around the house because of platform upgrades over the years, so moving to a
dual monitor set-up at home was as "easy" as clearing off some desk space
(not as easy as you might think).

I observed an increase in productivity almost immediately.
