I gave my mother her first PC when she was around 75. She loved being able
to keep in touch with relatives so easily. She had all the gadgets - webcam,
microphone, photo printer, etc. and every year she would bug me to update
the computer so it would be faster.

She was a huge quilter and also used the computer to design her quilts.

Whenever she had a question about how to do something, I would write out the
instructions and email them to her. This way she could refer back to them
whenever she needed to (memory can get a bit spotty as you get older). It
could be simple things like "how do I attach a file/photo to my email", or
"how do I set a picture to be the background on my desktop".

I now find those instructions helpful for other seniors, so whenever I'm
asked a question, I ask for their email address and send them the answers,
which they in turn often save.

I also had my mother take the free course from Virtual University on how to
protect yourself online.
