TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
"I have to make a point of telling my son and my well-
meaning stay-at-home Mom friends that I am 'at work' and have
deadlines."
My late father-in-law used to come over EVERY DAY to tell me that I needed
to get a real job. The fact that I made more that he ever made was not
relevant...I needed a job with bennies. Best thing I ever did was ignore him
and lock the door.
"There is a temptation to work outside on the patio, but I only do that
when calls are not likely to happen."
Get a wireless phone. I work in my home office, in the Living Room in front
of the fireplace (great on cold, wintery days), or out on the deck. I try to
keep my deck time to a minimum, because nature has a way of destroying
concentration.
"My biggest challenge is email. I spend way too long browsing when I
should be deleting. Trouble is, as a virtual business, I live and die
by email."
I write hardware and software manuals, so virtuality is a relative thing for
a couple of customers. I connect to their servers, but I still have to go to
the occasional status meetings, and I make it point to be at the customer's
facility a couple of days a week for photographs, procedure debugging,
engineer bugging, and morning doughnuts....okay, forget the doughnuts (I'm a
Diabetic).

"...I walked to work, quit my job, and kept walking. Better to be a pilgrim
without a destination, I figured, than to cross the wrong threshold each
day." (Sy Safransky)
