I've seen books that do precisely this: they restart page numbering at
the start of each chapter, and page numbers are always preceded by
chapter number (such as 5-23, 7-89, 11-27).

Personally, I hate this. It's especially annoying when using a long,
detailed index that is cluttered with this kind of page numbering. I
much prefer simple sequential pagination throughout the book (e.g., the
first page is 1; the last page is 759).

Question: Is there any situation where pagination such as 5-23, 7-89,
11-27, etc. is preferable? Why?
