It's been about 12 years since I worked anywhere that had a budget to
hire production staff. Everywhere else I've been, everyone did for
themselves.

If I was doing it as a 1099 writer, I might decide to sub it out to
someone, depending on time, budget and how much I really wanted to avoid
having to do it.

Okay, so it may well be that it's better to just do the donkey work yourself for practical and budgetary reasons. I was just thinking of a situation I was recently involved in that might be analogous. I contracted some estate sale agents to sell some items of mine on consignment, and when they came to my house to decided what they were going to take and pick it up, they did the work themselves of carrying the boxes out to their SUV. I was kind of surprised that they didn't bring a couple of jocks with them to carry the boxes, since their job was to do the intellectual work of determining what was of value, doing the research to determine what price to put on it, and then selling it. But that would have made for more people to deal with and taken away from their revenue, so I guess it made sense.
