In the Province of British Columbia, they have changed their labour laws for
high tech companies, and they can now require overtime without compensation
(which explains why I would never live in BC!).
When I was younger, it was considered a "career-killer" to demand overtime
when you were on salary, and it would limit your promotions or growth in the
company. Over the years I've come to realize that an employee is merely a
commodity to be disposed of at whim anyway, regardless of how hard you've
worked, how many hours you've put in, etc. To me, contracting seems more
prestigious, your time is valued and you are compensated accordingly. If you
want a health and dental plan, there are many in Canada that are quite
affordable. Vacation pay? Put a percentage of each cheque aside. Ultimately,
the employees who get the most respect are the ones who will not be taken
advantage of, who will stand up for themselves and their rights (without
sounding like a union-lover!).
I work as a captive employee for two reasons - 1) I'm too lazy to market
myself, and 2) I work for family, but they know I won't hesitate to walk if
I'm not treated right.
