Hi Indria,
My tech writing program included grantsmanship. But, what kind of
training works best for you depends on your goals and what is available.
If you are absolutely sure that grants are your passion, you may want to
compare programs in tech writing with programs in community development
to see which is most attractive to you.
As for volunteer experience - take a look at the non profit agencies in
your area. The poorer they are, the happier they will be to have your
help. And, don't be discouraged if they don't get back to you. Follow
up. Go in in person. People at these agencies are insanely busy, and
may just get distracted. They also get offers form people who don't
follow though, so your persistence will help then trust your sincerity.
Good luck, and keep us posted!
