I've always used YYYYMMDD for all date-wise sorting and grouping.
Getting back to the original question, yes I've organized and created
style guidelines/taxonomies for graphics. I do so based on subject and
need. How you do it might be completely different from how I do it.
For example, I've had some grouped and named by product and function,
others by window name and function, and others by use case.
