Wikipedia mentions acronyms, initialisms, and alphabetisms:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym:

Abbreviation - any shortened form of a word or phrase
Acronym - a word (such as SONAR) created from the first letters of each
word in a series of words
Initialism - Abbreviations that are formed from initials, whether said
result is pronounced as letters or a word (such as URL: you-are-el or erl)

It says there's no agreement on what to call abbreviations whose
pronunciation involves the combo of letter names and words, such as JPEG
and MS-DOS.

And, many more examples are given.
