When I was younger (long, long ago!), I took a job as a Financial Secretary
at a soda company. It was a unionized office, and the President's secretary
was the union rep. There was a 3 month probationary period. During the 3
months I often asked for work from other secretaries, because I like to be
busy, and I like to help. At the end of the 3 months I was let go because
they thought I was trying to make them look bad, despite the Controller
saying I was the best secretary he ever had.

I don't know what is best - an environment where people can be let go at
will, or a unionized environment where, once you are in, you can be as lazy
as you want. I wish there was a fairer way to deal with employees, but at
the end of the day, if a company is like that, they really are doing you a
favour by cutting you loose so you can find something better.
